Well, we finally broke down and offered Madeline a pacifier. There are times when she's just fussy and diaper changes, burps, feeding and rocking don't seem to have any effect. It's our nuclear option - a last resort that is pretty effective. We waited five weeks before using it to give her plenty of time to adjust to nursing, and the more we use it, the easier it is for us to come to grips with the idea of sedating our child.

Welcome to the wonderful world of parenting, with all of it's decision-making challenges.
And, take it easy on yourself. A pacifier is far from "sedating." She remains her same lovable and loving self, just as alert and engaged with life as before. Besides, I guess we all have some form of "pacifier" in our lives ;)

Please don't say that you are sedating that precious child. She just needs to find out what works for her to get all cozy so she can fall asleep. (In a few weeks she might be using her thumb, who knows).
It is all good and normal.
hello, and how i enjoy the bog.she is beautiful!!! bill jr never had a pacy but betsy was born with such sucking ability that we chose the same route you have taken. i took it away at 6 months and she took to the thumb. took her to a peds dentist at age 3 and he suggested i put a woolen mitten on her hand, she took to the other hand. then 2 mittens and that was the end of that, look at her today, her teeth are beautiful. yes, this too shall pass. keep your chin up. you are great parents, all my love aunt robbie
